Posthumous Degree

GUIDELINES FOR AWARDING CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION

POSTHUMOUS BACHELOR'S DEGREE / MASTER'S DEGREE

The Certificate of Recognition is awarded to the family of a student who died while a part of our university community. The certificate is recognition of that student's value to the university.

The awarding of a posthumous Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree, is recognition of a student who was near completion of their degree and/ or recognition of excellence. The awarding of the degree is initiated by the faculty of the student's department. Excellence in the areas of academics, university service, and community service are considered.

POSTHUMOUS CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION

I. ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES

Student nominated for a posthumous Certificate of Recognition shall be: Any student matriculated and making progress toward a degree or credential at SSU either at the undergraduate or graduate level.

II. PROCEDURES

To nominate a student for the awarding of a posthumous Certificate of Recognition:

A)  The department in which the student was working toward a degree or credential shall nominate the student in a written letter to the Academic Senate indicating the:

  1. Student's name.
  2. Major or credential program in which the student was enrolled.

B) The Academic Senate considers the eligibility of the recommendation for the awarding of a Certificate of Recognition. If guidelines for the awarding of a certificate have been met, the Academic Senate forwards its recommendation to the Vice President of Student Affairs for the awarding of a Certificate of Recognition to the family.

POSTHUMOUS BACHELOR'S DEGREE

I. ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES
Student nominated for a posthumous Bachelor's Degree should:

A.)  Be a matriculated student with 12 or less units remaining for degree completion and should have a minimum of 24 units in residence at SSU.

OR

B.) Be a student acknowledged by the department for excellence in areas of academics, university service, and community service even though the student did not met the guidelines in Section IA.

II. PROCEDURES

A)  To nominate a student for the awarding of a posthumous Bachelor's Degree: The department in which the student was working toward a degree shall nominate the student in a written letter to the Academic Senate indicating the:

  1. Student's name.
  2. Degree with major to be awarded.
  3. Number of units remaining for degree completion.
  4. Number of units earned in residence at SSU overall and in a major.
  5. If appropriate - that the student is acknowledged by the department for excellence in areas of academics, university service, and community service.

B) The Academic Senate considers the eligibility of the recommendation for the awarding of a posthumous Bachelor's Degree.

1.) If guidelines for the awarding of a posthumous Bachelor's Degree have been met, the Academic Senate forwards its recommendations to the President of the University for the awarding of the degree to the family.

2.) If guidelines for the awarding of a posthumous Bachelor's Degree have not been met, see guidelines for the awarding of a posthumous Certificate of Recognition.

POSTHUMOUS MASTER'S DEGREE

I. ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES

Student nominated for a posthumous Master's Degree should:

A.) Have advanced to candidacy.

OR

B.)  Be a student acknowledged by the department for excellence in areas of academics, university service, and community service even though the student did not met the guidelines in Section IA.

II PROCEDURES

To nominate a student for the awarding of a posthumous Master's Degree.

A) The department in which the student was working toward a degree shall nominate
      the student in a written letter to the Academic Senate indicating the:

  1. Student's name.
  2. Degree with major to be awarded.
  3. Advancement to candidacy,
  4. Number of units earned in residence at SSU overall and in a major,
  5. If appropriate - that the student is acknowledged by the department for
    excellence in areas of academics, university service, and community service.

B.) The Academic Senate considers the eligibility of the recommendation for the awarding of a posthumous Master's Degree.

1.)  If guidelines for the awarding of a posthumous Master's Degree have been met, the Academic Senate forwards its recommendations to the President of the University for the awarding of the degree to the family.

2.)  If guidelines for the awarding of a posthumous Master's Degree have not been met, see guidelines for the awarding of a posthumous Certificate of Recognition.
