Resolution Regarding the Recruitment of an Underrepresented Group

WHEREAS the University has drafted a Diversity Vision Statement designed to promote the creation of a more diverse campus population; and

WHEREAS the Department of Assessment and Analytical Studies has compiled data that indicate that between 1993 and 2001, there has been a significant (7.2%) decline in the number of entering freshmen who report that their family income is in the $40,000-$50,000 per year range, while at the same time there has been a significant (14.7%) increase in the number of entering freshmen who report that their annual family income is in the $100,000-$150,000 range, and this discrepancy cannot be attributed solely to an increase in average family income in California during this period; and

WHEREAS the Senior Director of Enrollment Services at Sonoma State University has suggested to the University’s Student Affairs Committee that the recruitment of students whose families earn less than $50,000 per year could be facilitated by faculty involvement in the recruitment process through follow-up phone calls to members of this underrepresented group who have been accepted for admission to Sonoma State University; therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Academic Senate of Sonoma State University recommend to the faculty of the University that they participate in the recruitment of students whose families earn less than $50,000 per year by making phone calls to members of this underrepresented group who have been accepted for admission to Sonoma State University, encouraging these students to attend the University and assuring them of the University’s commitment to "foster and sustain an inclusive and pluralistic environment that empowers everyone to achieve their highest potential without fear of prejudice or discrimination" (wording borrowed from the Diversity Vision Statement).
